How Much Does a Private Chef Cost in Miami?
How much a private chef costs in Miami depends first on the per-person price: one chef marketplace's Miami page lists about $125 to $175 per person all-inclusive and says most groups of 6 to 10 guests pay $750 to $1,600 in total. Other Miami pages list anywhere from $59 to $225 per person. A booking minimum or a separate grocery bill can change the final total.
This guide is for a Miami host planning a dinner at home, a rental or yacht meal, or weekly meal prep. It works out totals for a dinner for 8 and for a month of meal prep.
Figures were checked in October 2026. Miami prices are what marketplaces and chef services list for themselves. Treat this as general information and check legal or tax questions with a professional.
How much does a private chef cost per person in Miami?
Six Miami sources list per-person prices from $59 to $225, and what each price covers differs.
Marketplace C ties its range to the chef, the cuisine and the number of courses, and group size and the setting move the rest, as the sections below show. A price with groceries on top needs the grocery bill added before you compare it with an all-inclusive one.
Private chef cost per hour and per year
Pages from 2025 and 2026 put private chef hourly rates between $35 and $150. A placement agency prices a full-time private chef at $130,000 to $260,000 or more a year in salary alone.
A 5-hour booking at $75 to $100 per hour costs $375 to $500. Across the New York marketplace's full $50 to $150 range it costs $250 to $750, before any groceries or extras the quote adds.
Government wage data is a different measure. The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey reports a May 2025 mean of $28.94 per hour, or $60,190 a year, for chefs and head cooks in the Miami metro area. For cooks in private households nationally it reports $25.81 per hour, or $53,680 a year, an estimate based on about 1,100 workers. These are wages paid to employees. The BLS chefs and head cooks profile notes that its chefs and head cooks pay data leaves out the self-employed and workers in private households. None of these figures show what a household pays a private chef.
Does the price per guest drop as the group grows?
Usually, up to a point. Marketplace B lists $220 per guest for 2 guests, $173 for 4 to 6 guests and $163 for 8 guests, and a minimum booking can cancel the saving, as the last row of the table below shows.
A New York chef marketplace gives general bands with no region stated. They run $150 to $300 per person for two to six guests, $100 to $250 for ten to twenty, and $75 to $200 for fifty or more.
Here is what the Miami prices come to for 8 guests, before any tip and before tax:
What a private chef price includes and what costs extra
Groceries are the biggest difference: some Miami quotes include ingredients, cooking and cleanup, while Chef service B bills groceries on top. Drinks and tableware are often a separate question.
Check every quote against the points below.
- Groceries. The quotes use three setups. Marketplace A and Chef service A include them. A chef booking platform's Chicago page reimburses groceries at cost on receipts, and Chef service B adds them on top. A New York chef marketplace advises confirming which one applies.
- Menu planning and coordination. The New York marketplace says most chefs bundle setup, cooking, plating and cleanup into the dinner price. Occasionally a chef adds a separate flat fee for menu planning and grocery coordination.
- Drinks and tableware. Marketplace B says drinks are not included by default and that it does not provide tableware or glassware, so ask who will.
- Staff and tax. An Austin private chef company advises checking whether a quote includes groceries, staff, and tax or gratuity.
- Processing fee. The Chicago booking platform adds a 3% processing fee to chef fees and groceries.
Private chef cost per day on a yacht or at a rental
For a day on the water, Marketplace D says independent yacht chefs on its Miami and Fort Lauderdale page may charge $600 to $1,000 per day plus ingredients. It made that comparison itself and sells yacht dinners of its own from $180 per person all-inclusive.
- Per-guest yacht pricing. Chef service B lists the same $200 per guest plus groceries for yacht dinners, with its $2,000 minimum applied per charter.
- Extra onboard staff. The same service adds a stewardess, server or bartender for $50 to $55 per hour per person, with a five-hour minimum.
- Rental packages. A Miami luxury rentals company lists a premium private chef package at $897 for 4 hours and $1,197 for 8 hours, with groceries and gratuity not included. The listing does not say how many guests it covers.
- Reference days outside Miami. In a 2023 post, a personal chef franchise gives $150 to $400 per service day plus groceries. A 2022 staffing agency article, now outdated, put the average New York day at $200 to $300 including groceries, cooking and cleanup.
For a yacht dinner for 8, Chef service B's $2,000 charter minimum applies before groceries and any extra staff, as in the table for 8 guests above. Ask whether the food is cooked on board or prepared ashore and who brings it to the marina.
How much does a private chef cost per week for meal prep?
Featured Miami chefs on Marketplace D list meal prep at $320 to $500 per session. At one session a week that comes to about $1,385.60 to $2,165 a month, using 4.33 weeks per month, before groceries where they are extra.
A New York chef marketplace gives general weekly ranges, with no region stated: $300 to $600 for an individual or couple and $600 to $1,200 for a family of three to five. At 4.33 weeks per month that is $1,299 to $2,598 for an individual or couple and $2,598 to $5,196 for a family. It describes a typical weekly package as three to five prepared meals, grocery shopping, menu planning, meal packaging and kitchen cleanup.
The Southeast staffing agency says a chef cooking three days a week typically runs $1,000 to $1,800 a week before groceries. That is a chef working in one household several days a week, a different arrangement from a packaged weekly service. A personal chef franchise, in a 2023 post, prices its standard package for grocery shopping, menu planning and meal preparation at $125 to $225, with groceries separate.
Do you pay sales tax on a private chef in Miami?
The Florida tax texts reviewed for this guide cover restaurants and caterers and do not name private chefs, so ask whether a quote includes sales tax. If sales tax applies, the Miami-Dade rate is 7%.
An older revision of the Florida Department of Revenue guide on restaurants and catering, the one reviewed here, says food or drinks that restaurants and similar businesses prepare, serve or sell are taxable. It allows few exceptions. Check the current revision before relying on it. Florida Rule 12A-1.0115 is written for restaurants and similar businesses. It places a caterer's premises where the meals are served, and it taxes the charge for preparing food the customer supplies, whether it is eaten on the preparer's premises or elsewhere.
Neither text mentions private or personal chefs, so they do not settle whether a chef who cooks food you bought is taxable. The 7% is the state's 6% plus Miami-Dade County's 1.0% surtax, from a September 2026 table by the Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research. The totals in this guide are shown before tax. For how a tip charge on a bill is treated, see service charge vs gratuity.
Mistakes to avoid and what to ask a private chef before you book
The most common mistake is comparing a quote that includes groceries with one that does not. Put the quotes on the same terms first, then ask a few questions of each chef.
- Minimum booking. Marketplace A says many Miami private chefs require a minimum booking value between $400 and $1,000, depending on event size and menu complexity.
- Your kitchen. Tell the chef what you have, such as oven, stove and fridge space, and ask what the chef brings.
- Guest count. The Miami examples above run from $220 per guest for 2 guests to $163 for 8, so ask for a quote at your exact count.
- Pricing policies. The American Personal & Private Chef Association advises asking each chef about pricing policies, on an FAQ page last updated in 2010. It says costs vary with your needs and your local area.
- Tax. No Florida text reviewed here names private chefs, so ask whether the quote includes any sales tax, 7% in Miami-Dade if it applies.
Send every chef the same details, such as the date, guest count, place and allergies, so the totals can be compared, and ask for the total in writing. Frequently asked questions
How much does a private chef cost for two people?
About $440 for dinner at Marketplace B, which lists $220 per guest for 2 guests. Marketplace A says many Miami private chefs set a minimum booking of $400 to $1,000, so with some chefs a small dinner is billed at the minimum rather than at the per-guest price. Marketplace B's price for two covers the chef's dinner at that listed rate.
How much should I budget for groceries with a private chef?
The Southeast staffing agency says a chef cooking for a family of four typically spends $300 to $600 a week on groceries, depending on the menu, and bills them separately. Marketplace A and Chef service A include groceries in their Miami prices, so confirm what your own quote covers before you add a grocery budget.
Do you tip a private chef in Miami?
Check first whether your quote is all-inclusive. Marketplace B's blog gives traditional etiquette as 15% to 20%, up to 25% for exceptional service, and says no tip is expected with all-inclusive pricing like its own. It also reports that its Miami guests tipped 14.72% on average, a figure it gives without its method, and its Miami page leaves gratuity to the guest.
Does a private chef need a license in Florida, or do I need a caterer?
A Florida DBPR FAQ from 2017 says a person hired to cook in your home, where you and your guests eat, is a personal chef and needs no license from the division. Food prepared elsewhere or delivered needs a catering license. The FAQ may not reflect later rule changes, so confirm with the division.
